Some places upon this Earthly realm just seem to transcend time and space. Moments where time slows, and the air feels charged with a deep reverence. And Uluru - Australia’s spiritual heartland - is absolutely one of those places. Its ancient presence holds a spiritual energy, and grandeur that must be seen and felt to be truly believed.
When Shanade and Kristian chose Uluru for their elopement, they sought more than a beautiful backdrop—they wanted a sacred experience that honours the land upon which they fell in love and built their life together. As their photographer and guide, I had the privilege of creating an elopement that honoured their journey and the spirit of this land. Shanade and I both sharing Māori heritage, and when visiting a site of deep cultural and spiritual significance, it was important to both of us to ensure that our journey there upheld our own tikanga (cultural protocols), spiritual integrity and cultural respect. If I am to be completely honest, creating something like this while upholding cultural integrity was a tough one to bring together. But I just surrendered to the process, and trusted in the ancestors to guide us on the journey. The result was a weaving of ancient rituals, cultural respect, and intentionality into a day that was so much more than a ceremony—it was a spiritual experience of connection to something greater than ourselves.
Uluru is a living, breathing spiritual entity. The moment you arrive, you can feel its pulse—a grounding force that humbles you. This land speaks, and we listen. As an Indigenous woman myself, I understood the sacredness of Uluru on a deeply personal level, and really strived to build a connection that not only honoured this sacred place of Uluru but also The Anangu, who have called this place home for tens of thousands of years.
Before we began our journey here, I led Shanade and Kristian through a sacred karanga which is a Māori ceremonial call that acknowledges our position of visiting as manuhiri (guests to this land) while also setting our intention to tread softly and be respectful to the ancestors, spirits, and land. The wind shifted, and the birds began to call back, as if the earth itself welcomed us. From that moment, it was clear we were being guided by something far greater.
Shanade and Kristian asked me to help them incorporate a cleansing ceremony in to their experience. A spiritual ritual designed to let go of anything no longer serving their highest good, and to breathe renewal and new beginnings in to their marriage. I prepared a unique blend of herbs—Kawakawa, sacred in Shanade’s Māori heritage, and red clover, a symbol of Kristian’s Finnish roots, as well as Eucalyptus to represent their connection to the country they now call home. Together, these herbs carried the energy of healing, protection, and unity, blessing them as they stepped into this new chapter together.
The ritual unfolded as the sun set behind the stoic Kata-Tjuta on one side, and Uluru seemingly humming with approval on the other, with Shanade & Kristian standing in between the two. The sacred act of cleansing, setting the intention for a marriage rooted in love, respect, and spiritual alignment with the Earth.
The entire journey felt divinely guided, as if we were being led by something greater. From the karanga to the vows, everything fell into place with an effortless, magical flow. Shanade & Kristian began their wedding day with a private Indigenous guided tour, to learn about the significance of Uluru (Tjukuritja) to the local peoples as well as the role it played in the Creation (Tjukurpa) stories. It gave us a deep insight into traditional Anangu culture and way of life. We then experienced a private dot painting workshop with our Indigenous guide and artist, further deepening our knowledge and connection with this sacred place.
Later on in the afternoon, we were picked up by our tour guide, and were welcomed on to Patji (private Uluru Family Lands) by Elder Sammy Uluru: the grandson of Paddy Uluru and a direct descendant of the land’s custodians. Unrivalled views of both Uluru and Kata-Tjuta in the background as the sun set, and our Celebrant Annie wove her magic with the most eye-watering ceremony. This was the first wedding ever held on private Uluru family lands, and to make the day even more meaningful, Shanade & Kristian got to walk away with the signature of an Uluru Elder as a legal witness to their sacred adventure.
The emotion of this day is something I’ll carry with me always—the gratitude, the connection, the sacredness of what we had created together. Uluru cradled us in its ancient embrace, and as I captured their elopement, I wasn’t just taking photos—I was documenting the energy, spirit, and love that filled the air.

"we're still in awe at how special this experience was for us!"
"It's how moments like these should feel: joyful and present. You exceeded all of our expectations; everything was so thoughtfully planned! The only thing that could make it better is the chance to do it all over again! It all came together perfectly, guided by something greater, I just know it. And we ADORE the photos. They are beautiful!"
